Garlic bulbs are living plants. The wrapper on the outside of the bulb and individual cloves is needed to protect them from disease, pests, and dehydration. Bulbs and cloves are easily damaged, so handle them with great care. Do not separate the cloves from the bulb until ready to plant. Plant the larger cloves, which may range in number on each bulb. The smaller cloves may be planted but will yield smaller bulbs. The garlic may need to adapt to new growing conditions and may need replanting over several years to increase to top size. |
